ARTWORKS around town is a nonprofit Gallery and Art Center that shows work by regional artists and provides educational art programming. Its location, in the 150-year-old Upper Market House in the historic Market District of South Center Wheeling, defies conventional conceptions of art gallery. The former produce market, now houses two Specialty Shops, a Pie shop, and ARTWORKS around town, all on ground level and handicapped accessible.
ARTWORKS around town is dedicated to help make the South Central Wheeling and Market area a destination for arts and entertainment in the region.
The spacious Upper Market House has allowed ARTWORKS around town to define three gallery spaces providing a variety of experiences. The original meaning of their Latin names reflects the function of each space.
The Atrium Gallery, where guests are received, features art work by area school students and other art groups such as art guilds and associations.
The Studio Gallery, the place of creativity and contemplation, accommodates our workshops and visiting artist or special group exhibits.
The Forum Gallery, the market place of creative ideas, is the central gallery and the largest. In it 25 to 30 Artist Associates from the local community and region show painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, fibers, jewelry, greeting cards, photography, etc.

Each Artist Associate also takes turns volunteering as gallery guide ready to answer questions about the work on display. All work in the Forum and Studio galleries can be purchased and the Artist Associate can assist you with this. You may also find the artists at our monthly First Friday receptions 5:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. This gathering, complete with music and refreshments, is the official opening for the Featured Artist and School-Group exhibits.
Both the regular hours and the First Friday receptions afford a relaxed environment in which to discuss works on display with the artists who created them. Through workshops, lectures and performances, ARTWORKS around town makes the arts accessible to a wide audience. It is indeed our mission as an educational, charitable organization, to tune as many people as possible to the artist within, and together, teaching, learning, and making art leave the world a better place.
